Surfing in Piha dates back to the late 50`s with local living legend Peter Byers one of the very first to make surfbaords in NZ. The challenging and powerful west coast surf has been a great test for all surfers throughout the years.
The site of many national and international competions, Piha has spawned many of the top NZ surfers. In 2006 /07 saw the worlds best competing at Piha with Andy and Bruce Irons, Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning, Mark Occillupo and Sunny Garcia going against the best of NZ Maz Quinn, Daniel Kereopa, Bobby Hansen and Jay Quinn in the Vodafone sessions.

Lion Rock surf shop was created seven years ago by the past 5 times national NZ champion Iain Ratso Buchanan. Being a shaper for over 25 years, he can offer you expert advice on all your board requirements from the learner through to the experienced. Being an ASP international judge keeps Ratso on the road, with the lovely Jasmyn Reid managing the shop, we guarrantee to beat all prices over the hill, in town. Custom shaping is available also.
